- La croyance est le processus mental expérimenté par une personne qui adhère à une thèse ou une hypothèse, de façon qu’elle les considère comme vérité, indépendamment des faits confirmant ou infirmant cette thèse ou cette hypothèse.
- En ce sens elle s’oppose à la notion d’esprit critique, et trouve son antithèse dans l’instrumentalisme qui considère que les modèles scientifiques ne sont que des instruments nous permettant de concevoir commodément les phénomènes.
- Par métonymie, le terme désigne aussi ce que l'on croit, c'est-à-dire l’objet d'une croyance. Le concept philosophique de croyance fait partie de la théorie de la connaissance.
