Un combustible est une matière qui, en présence d'oxygène et d'énergie, peut se combiner à l'oxygène (qui sert de comburant) dans une réaction chimique générant de la chaleur : la combustion.
On parle aussi de combustible nucléaire pour désigner les matières fissiles utilisées pour produire de l'énergie par fission dans les réactions nucléaires, bien qu'il ne s'agisse pas d'une réaction de combustion.
